Care of Synthetic Wigs

Your purchase of a synthetic wig will give you good service if you follow a few simple rules.  These rules are important in extending the life and appearance of your wig.

Synthetic wigs of today are much different than they were years ago.  Today they are blended with different types of fibers that create a more natural appearance and luster.  They also will be more resistant to heat.  Extended exposure to heat will still have an effect on the appearance, however the time factor has increases.  Therefore it is important to understand a few simple rules of care.

  •  Keep you wig clean.  Synthetic wig are highly susceptible to pollution that will give the wig a dull and clumpy look.  The elastic in the wig is also susceptible to deterioration from perspiration and dirt.

  • Always wash your wig in tepid water.  Remember excessive heat will change the life, look, and curl of the fiber.

  • Always condition your wig after every cleaning.  This will help keep the luster and provide protection from heat and pollution.

  •  Never brush through your wig when wet.  You may run your fingers through the wig or use a wide toothcomb. This is important to keep the original curl pattern for as long as possible.  Remember that eventually the original curl pattern will loosen.

  • Always run your fingers through wig at the end of each wearing to keep the piece free of tangles.  If you have purchased a longer wig this is extremely important, as tangles will turn into knots that will be impossible to remove later on.

  • Keep in mind that the purchase of either a curlier or longer wig will provide a shorter life span.

  • Never place wig on a form to dry or store.  This will alter the internal shape of the wig.  Remember as you wear the wig it will take on the shape of your own cranium, therefore it is important not to alter the shape that is being created by your head.  If you are not using the wig, turn it inside out and store in tissue paper or a paper bag. Never store your wig in a plastic bag.

  • Do not expose your wig to extreme heat.  Examples are direct heat from a pot on the stove or pan from the oven, extended time in direct sunlight or hot water.  Therefore always remove lid from pot or pan and let inside heat rise before looking directly in such.

  • Do not cut or attempt to repair the wig yourself.  Always return to place of purchase for repairs.

  • Some suggestions for cleaners for your wigs are: Tresseme, Wella or Suave Shampoos and Conditioners.  Never use a wig shampoo on your wig, as they will shorten the life of your wig.  Never use hairspray on your synthetic hairpiece.  A good, non-alcohol, spray gel will provide control for your piece after cleaning and may be used as a hairspray.  They will dry in a few minutes and provide protection from the elements.  Any questions that you may have contact your trusted professional.
